SALEM - Western Mennonite senior Bryan Martin signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Corban College beginning in 2007-08 Tuesday, as announced at a press conference held inside the Fellowship Hall on the campus of Western Mennonite High School. Martin, a 6-foot-3 point guard, signed his national letter of intent in front of family, friends, coaches, and administrators today to become the first official recruit of the Class of 2011 for fifth-year head coach Justin Sherwood. "I am very excited about joining the Corban family," commented Martin. "The guys embraced me right away when I practiced with them and I look forward to bringing my talents to Corban next season." Martin had been contacted by nine colleges and universities in Oregon, Washington, Utah, and South Carolina including D-I Utah Valley State College, D-II Western Oregon University, D-III Willamette University, D-III George Fox University, and NAIA D-II Warner Pacific College. "My choice was easy," said Martin. "I want to play college ball at a Christian institution that is close to home. Under 21-year head coach Gary Hull, Martin has scored 381 points (avg. 10.58), grabbed 143 rebounds (avg. 3.97), handed out 245 assists (avg. 6.81), and registered 115 steals (avg. 3.19) in 36 career games as a Pioneer. Last season, Martin teamed with current Montana State University Bobcat Travis Derochowski and current Pioneer teammate Mike Woodard to lead Western Mennonite to the Oregon 2A state playoffs. Martin was the third leading scorer on a squad that finished in the top six at the state championship tournament behind Derochowski and Woodard. Martin follows former Pioneer, Derochowski, a 6-foot-10 center, who signed a national Letter of Intent to play for the Bobcats of Montana State University last season.
