Feb-11-2007 08:33Loggers Shutout Warriors in Game One, 6-0Salem-News.com SPORTS
TACOMA, Wash. - In the opening game of a double header between the Warriors and the Loggers, seniors Ryan Heil and Brett Timmerman combined to go 4-for-7 at the plate but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team fell, 6-0, to Puget Sound on Saturday. After having four men go to the plate in the opening inning with junior Jamie McGraw reaching via a walk and his first of two stolen bases, junior starter Jordan Emery took on the mighty bats of UPS and got stung. Following a fly-out to center field and a strike out, Emery walked UPS's Michael Olsen before designated hitter Joe Newland connected on his first of two home runs over the center field wall for the game's first runs. Over the next three innings, Corban recorded four hits -- one by junior Darren Johnson, one by Heil, one by Tmmerman, and one by sophomore Craig Spicer -- while Emery allowed a mere hit in the 4th inning to Puget Sound's Chris Dunbar. In the fifth inning, Emery began with a strike out of UPS's Tim Steggall before surrendering a double to left field by Olsen. Newland then put the game out of reach with his second home run of the day -- this time to left field -- that scored Olsen and made the board read 4-0 in favor of the host Loggers. Following the bomb of Newland's bat, Emery settled down and got the next two batters out via a pop-up to second base and a caught stealing following a bunt single. After Corban was held to a mere single to left center by Timmerman in the 6th inning, freshman Eric Bolden (Kent, Wash.) replaced Emery on the mound. Despite the change in scenery on the rubber, Puget Sound did not miss a beat as the Loggers put another two runs on the board via a double to right center and another double down the left field line for what would turn out to be the final tally of 6-0. As a team, Corban recorded six hits with Heil and Timmerman each recording a pair of base knocks, while Spicer and Johnson were the only other Warriors to reach safely with hits. Emery went 5.0 innings of work allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 5 hits, while striking out a season-high 6 batters. Bolden relieved Emery for the game's final inning, allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on 2 hits. Puget Sound's Newland led all players with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with 2 runs scored and 4 runs batted in. Five other Loggers -- Shaun Kiriu, Steggall, Olsen, Gregorio Beck, and Dunbar -- each recorded a hit off Warrior pitching. UPS's Evan Scandling went 4.0 innings off shut out ball to pick up the win, while striking out 5 Warrior batters. Zach Green and Kiriu combined to throw the final three innings, allowing a mere two hits, while striking out 3 Corban hitters. With the loss, Corban falls to 0-2, while Puget Sound picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-1.
