CORVALLIS - Kellie Evans, a former standout at Auburn University, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Oregon State women’s soccer program, head coach Steve Fennah announced Tuesday.

Evans joins the OSU staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., in 2006.

She has also worked at soccer camps at Kentucky and Auburn.

In addition, Evans has been an assistant coach in Florida’s ODP program and at Durant High School in Plant City, Fla.

Evans earned NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diplomas in December 2006.

“I’m excited about having Kellie join our program,” Fennah said. “She is a tremendous addition. She’s very energetic and has a very engaging personality that will mesh well with our players and our staff. She made a great impression on our staff and student-athletes during the interview process. The strong background that she brings from playing in the Southeastern Conference will add to the quality of our program.”

Evans graduated from Auburn in 2004. She helped the Tigers to three NCAA Tournaments and the 2002 Southeastern Conference championship.

Evans set the school record for assists in a season (13 in 2000) and finished second in assists on the school’s career list with 30.

She was also an Academic All-SEC selection, made the SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and earned a TOP Tiger Scholar-Athlete Award.

“Coming from the SEC, I have a lot of respect for the Pac-10,” Evans said.

“This is a great program and the athletic department is moving in the right direction with all of its success. When I met with people here, everyone was so excited about the future and I’m looking forward to being part of it. It’s a great opportunity to be part of something special.”

Evans, who is originally from Brandon, Fla., replaces Heidi Slaymaker, who left after seven seasons at OSU to return home to Canada and pursue a master’s degree.
