ST. GEORGE, Utah - Senior Kevin Beavers fired a final-round 68 to finish in a tie for 11th place overall as the Portland Pilots tied for 13th at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club. Beavers finished with a three-under 141 for the 36-hole tournament. Host Southern Utah, which placed three golfers in the top 20, took home the team trophy after carding a 562 in the 18-team tournament. The Thunderbirds finished three strokes better than runner-up Denver (565). Oral Roberts (570) finished third and Utah (575) placed fourth. Colorado State’s Aaron Weston claimed medalist honors to lead the Rams (576) to a fifth-place finish. Weston defeated Duncan Stewart in a playoff after both golfers finished with a nine-under 135. Weston closed with a 64 to force the playoff. Utah Valley State’s Nic Van Vuuren finished one stroke back at 136. Beavers opened with a first-round 73 on the par-72 course. Freshman Terence Macatangay claimed Portland’s best opening round with a two-under 70. Macatangay finished with a 149 to tie for 53rd place. Senior Jake Easterly tied for 61st with a 150 (78-72), while freshman Thomas Robertson (158) and junior Zach Thompson (159) rounded out the scoring for the Pilots. Portland totaled a 298 for both rounds to finish with a 596. The Pilots next hit the links for the Rainmaker Cup, an exhibition match at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore. on Feb. 17th-18th.
