Long Beach, Calif. - After two relays in the first day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships, the Oregon State swim team stands tied for third place with 100 points. California sits alone with 120 points. The Beavers set three school records during the first day of competition. The 200 Yard Medley Relay team of Saori Haruguchi, Felicia Castaneda, Kayla Rawlings, and Anna Crandall placed sixth overall with a time of 1:42.45. The time beat the previous school record in the 200 Medley Relay of 1:42.85, which was held by Suzanne Starkey, Birte Steven, Christina Kinney, and Kristin Huston. In the 800 Free Relay, the Beavers placed fourth (7:16.77) and shattered the previous school record time of 7:24.27. The team of Haruguchi, Crandall, Brittney Iverson, and Rawlings swam a near perfect race during the record breaking swim. Haruguchi, who led off the 800 Free Relay, set the school record in the 200 Free with the split she swam. Haruguchi’s time of 1:48.67 beat Courtney Eads' previous record of 1:49.43. “I am real happy with how well today went,” said OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz. “It could not have gone any better.” All three times are NCAA “B” cut times, which move the swimmers one step closer to the NCAA Championships. Action resumes tomorrow featuring the 500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50 Free, and the 200 Free Relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 AM and finals start at 6:00 PM. Standings after day one: 1.
