Wolves Drop Two in Arizona Tournament

The Wolves could manage only one hit against Dixie State’s Haley Schumers.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Western Oregon’s Christina Cooke gave up just one earned run and fanned eight but the Wolves still dropped its 2007 softball opener to Dixie State on Thursday night at the Triple Crown Division II Lead-Off Classic, 1-0.

The Wolves also lost to SE Oklahoma State, as the visitors scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win, 8-5.

The Rebels scored the game’s only run on a double steal in the fourth inning.

The Dixie State runner was first called out at home plate, but the after a umpire conference, the call was reversed and the runner was called safe.

Cooke scattered seven hits in the ball game, but was the hard-luck loser in the season opener.

Meanwhile, the Wolves could manage only one hit against Dixie State’s Haley Schumers.

Sara Tucholsky singled in the sixth inning, but a pinch runner was thrown out on the next pitch to kill the rally.

Dixie State improved to 9-2 on the season with the win.

SE Oklahoma State scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to slip by the Wolves in the night game.

WOU had five errors in the contest, which didn’t help their cause.

WOU had eight hits in the game, two of them by Whitney Lee.

WOU will play UC San Diego tomorrow, and then will enter into bracket play
