BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington avenged the biggest upset of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this year, topping Western Oregon in women’s basketball on Thursday night at Carver Gymnasium, 72-43.

The win for the No. 4 regionally ranked Vikings gave them a win over the squad that upset them last month in Monmouth (84-77).

They improved to 17-6 on the season and to 9-3 in GNAC play.

Western Oregon dropped to 3-19 on the year and 2-9 in conference play.

Mollie Stelmack led three WWU players in double figures with 12 points, while Liz McCarrell and Willow Cabe added 10 each.

Kori Seymour led WOU with 14 points, but the GNAC’s leading scorer Leada Berkey was held to just 11.

WOU shot just 17 percent from the field in the game, including four of 28 from three-point range.

Western Washington broke up a 5-5 game with a 12-2 run in the first half to set the tone early.

The Vikings led by as many as 18 points in the first half before settling for a 37-24 intermission margin.

The Vikings continued the pace early in the second half, coming out of the locker room on a 10-1.

They were never challenged after the break by their visitors.

Western Oregon will now travel to Saint Martin’s for a Saturday night game with the Saints.

Start time is 5:00 PM.
