Bruins Bomb Bulldogs Again in Regional Redux

ANTHEM, Ariz. - Bringing back memories of their last meeting in the 2006 NCAA Division III West Regional, the George Fox University Bruins blasted the University of Redlands Bulldogs 12-2 on the second day of play in the Arizona Desert Classic baseball tournament Friday afternoon at the Boulder Creek High School junior varsity field.

Chris Albrecht (1-0) was the winning pitcher last year when the Bruins defeated the Bulldogs 10-3 in the opening game of the regional, and he was on the mound again for the Bruins’ Desert Classic win.

The senior southpaw was superb, throwing seven shutout innings while scattering six hits, walking none, and striking out three.

Kyle Johnson and Brady Rhodes pitched an inning apiece to mop up.

The Bruins banged out 12 hits to defeat righthander Pat Whalen (0-1), breaking open a tight 1-0 game with a five-run outburst in the 4th.

Drew Johnson dropped a bases-loaded bunt for a single for the first run, and Dan Wentzell and Matt Wyckoff added two-run singles later in the frame.

Wentzell slugged a tape-measure two-run homer, estimated by some at 450 feet, in the 6th to finish with four RBI, and Ryan Fobert had a solo home run.

Pat Bailey continued his torrid pace by going 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Josh Burch was 2-5 with four runs scored.

George Fox (2-0) meets the University of La Verne Saturday at 10:00 AM.

Redlands (1-1) takes on Whitman College Saturday at 2:00 PM.
