NAMPA, Idaho - Western Oregon throwers Anthony Marin and Sabrina Freed won their respective Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor titles in the weight throw, highlighting Wolves efforts in the GNAC Championships on Monday at the Idaho Center Sports Complex. Marin set a GNAC championships mark with a throw of 59-8 ¼. That throw was also the second longest in Western Oregon history, only behind Ryan Parshall’s 1995 heave of 60-2. Marin also finished sixth in the shot put to score points for the Wolves. Freed won the weight throw on the women’s side by throwing a personal best of 49-4 ¼. That toss bettered her previous mark by 1.5 feet. Freed, a sophomore from Burns, threw nearly two feet better than runner-up Hannah Bowman from host Northwest Nazarene. Both Western Oregon squads placed third in the team standings. As expected, Seattle Pacific ran away with the women’s team title, while Central Washington edged Western Washington for the men’s team championship, 171 ½ to 166. In addition to the individual gold medals won by Marin and Freed, the Wolves also garnered second-place performances from Chevonna Lynch in the shot put, Matt Jirges in the 60 meters, Alee Rowley in the 5,000 meters and Jacque Postlewait in the long jump. Postlewait, the GNAC indoor champion last season, equaled her season best of 17-10 ¾ to finish behind Kim Bascom of Western Washington (18-3 ¼). Sarajane Rosenberg, the GNAC outdoor long jump champ last spring, finished right behind Postlewait with a leap of 17-6 ¼. Jirges, a 6-3, 250-pound defensive end on the Wolves football team, finished second with a personal best of 7.24 in the 60 meters. Matt Rogstad of Central Washington won the race in 7.15. Rowley ran a personal indoor best of 18:34.72, which is also second on the all-time at WOU. SPU’s Karin Rhode won the race in a meet-record 18:17.35. Lynch, who won the event in 2004 but then took two seasons off, had a throw of 41-4 ¾. CWU’s Krissy Tandle won with a put of 42-10 ¼. Other top WOU performances included a third place from Taryn Plypick in the high jump at 5-5 ¼. Emily Peterson of NNU won the event at 5-5 ¾. Freshman Lloyd Massey placed third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.73) and he was also fifth in the 400 meters (50.89). Sarah Howell bettered her own school record with a fourth place finish in the 800 meters (2:18.94). Postlewait added a fourth place crossing in the 60 meter hurdles (9.41) and a fifth place showing in the 200 meters (26.47). Jason Buckmier went 21-4 ¾ in the long jump to place fourth. In the triple jump, Rosenberg placed third with a leap of 35-10, ditto for Tyler Reisnaur on the men’s side with a mark of 44-9 3/4. The WOU men’s distance medley relay team placed third with a time of 10:44.90 in the day’s final event, which was just enough to keep fifth-place Northwest Nazarene behind them in the final team standings. WOU had 80 team points to NNU’s 77 after the relay was tallied. The WOU women’s distance medley squad also placed third, with a time of 12:41.26, less than a quarter-second off the school record. 2007 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track Championships Men’s Team Scores Central Washington 171 ½, Western Washington 166, Western Oregon 80, Northwest Nazarene 77, Seattle Pacific 47, Seattle 21, Saint Martin’s 16 ½.
