Feb-23-2007 22:23No. 15 Oregon State Rips UC Davis, 11-2Salem-News.com SPORTSFormer Sprague star Joey Wong extended his hit streak to six games.
DAVIS, Calif. - Oregon State put up five runs in the second inning and five more in the ninth as the 15th-ranked Beavers beat California-Davis 11-2 in the River City Classic baseball tournament Friday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex. OSU (10-1 overall) collected 13 hits in the game, and Beaver righthander Mike Stutes pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Against UC-Davis (3-6), the Beavers got the jump on the Aggies with a five-run second inning that included two-run doubles by Chris Hopkins and Darwin Barney. When OSU put it away in the ninth, Drew George contributed a pinch-hit, two-run triple. UCD had chances to make a game of it right up until the ninth inning, leaving 13 runners on base, 10 of those in scoring position. In the bottom of the eighth, The Aggies pushed one run across to get within 6-1 and loaded the bases with two out, but OSU’s Mark Grbavac struck out Kyle Mihaylo to end the inning. “We’re excited that we won, and we’re very aware that we played poorly today,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “We didn’t do things in the game that we normally do; we didn’t play the game with the intensity that we need to play to be the club that we want to be. Fortunately, we had a couple big innings and they made a couple mistakes but we can’t play the game the way we played it today and expect to win in our conference.” OSU outhit UC-Davis 13-8, with five different Beavers collecting two hits. Scott Santschi came off the bench to go 2-for-2, Hopkins was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two stolen bases, Barney was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Mitch Canham and Braden Wells were both 2-for-5 with an RBI and Wells hads a double. Oregon State infielder Joey Wong’s hitting streak ended at six games; that’s the longest streak for OSU so far this season. The Beavers took the lead in the top of the second after Canham and Wells delivered back-to-back singles, then pulled off a double steal of second and third. Hopkins drove a double to right-center to drive them in, then Mike Lissman followed with a double that scored Hopkins from second. After Wong reached on an error to put runners at the corners, Barney shot a double just inside third base to score Lissman and Wong; Barney was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple but OSU led 5-0. Oregon State added another unearened run in the top of the fifth inning when Wong walked and eventually scored on an error. OSU’s five-run ninth started with Wong drawing a walk, then Santschi singling through the right side with one out; a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Jordan Lennerton’s groundout scored Wong and advanced Santschi to second, then Canham singled up the middle to score Santschi. Wells followed with a double to deep left-center that scored Canham from first for a 9-0 lead. Brett Casey then pinch-hit and delivered his first career hit, a line drive to right that advanced Wells to third. George came up and drove his triple to right-center, scoring both runners for an 11-1 OSU advantage. Oregon State lefthander Anton Maxwell followed Stutes to the mound and allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out one. Jorge Reyes worked 1/3 of an inning before Grbavac closed out the game, going 1 1/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits while walking none and striking out one. OSU continues the tournament against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Sacramento State’s Hornet Field, then concludes the event against Sac State on Sunday at 2:00 PM. Saturday’s game can be heard live on KUIK-AM (1360) in the Portland area and via subscription at www.osubeavers.com, while Sunday’s game can be heard live via subscription on www.osubeavers.com and delayed on KUIK at 3:30 PM.
