LEWISTON, Idaho - Western Oregon rolled to an easy victory in game one and were then rolled themselves in their second game of the day at the Guardian Plumbing & AC Tournament, hosted by Lewis-Clark State. The Wolves hammered their way to a 14-4 lead and an eventual 14-9 victory over Missouri Western in the morning game, but were then pasted by defending NAIA national champion LC State in the afternoon contest, 11-4. WOU is now 4-4 on the year, and will take on Saint Martin’s on Saturday (11:00 AM) and the Warriors again on Sunday (11:00 AM). In the first game, WOU scored five runs in the fifth inning and then added five more in the seventh to defeat the Griffons, who are ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Division II Central Region. Boo Christenson had a two-run single in the fifth inning, while Brent Mertens (single) and Paul Fisher (double) had two-run blows to highlight the seventh inning. Fisher and Mertens each had a pair of hits and three RBI in the game for the Wolves, and Coubi Jiles added two base knocks. Kevin Corrigan got the win on the mound, giving up only two earned runs in six innings of work while fanning six batters. Things didn’t go as smoothly for the Wolves against the undefeated Warriors, who improved to 6-0 on the season. Lewis-Clark State scored in seven of the nine innings played and pounded out 16 hits against three WOU pitchers. Six Wolves errors didn’t help their cause either. Nonetheless, WOU did lead 4-3 after five innings of play, but they wouldn’t score the rest of the way and the Warriors did—with two runs in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth (WOU was the home team). Corrigan and Travis Coursey each hit home runs for the Wolves, Corrigan’s was a three-run shot in the fifth. Coursey had two hits in the game for WOU, as did Joe McCormick. Mike Eisenhauer took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. Beau Mills had four hits for the Warriors and Kyle Greene added three base knocks.
