Western Oregon`s Marin Sets School Record

Salem-News.com SPORTS

SEATTLE - Western Oregon sophomore Anthony Marin broke a 12-year old school record and improved his national provisional mark by two feet with a 61-9 heave in the weight throw on Saturday at the SPU Last Chance meet, held at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Arena.

Marin, who won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title last week in the same event, moved to the top of WOU's all-time list by passing the 1995 mark of Randy Parshall, who threw 60-2.

The McKay High School alum also bettered his chances to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships, to be held March 9th-10th in Boston.

New national rankings will come out tomorrow, and Marin will then know whether or not to pack his bags.

Provisional qualifiers Sabrina Freed and Taryn Plypick also competed in Seattle in attempt to better their marks.

Freed went 48-0 in the weight throw, short of her season best of 49-4 1/4, ditto for Plypick who high jumped 5-5 1/4 on Saturday. Her season best is 5-7.

The Wolves squad will next begin its outdoor season, competing next Saturday in the Linfield Icebreaker.
