Feb-03-2007 22:10Tritons Bounce Back With Double Dip of WOUSalem-News.com SPORTSUCSD wins 5-3 and 4-3, fanning 18 Wolves batters.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The day after clocking 14 hits in one game, Western Oregon could only manage to scratch out 13 base knocks during 5-3 and 4-3 baseball losses to UC San Diego at Triton Field. With the twinbill wins by the Tritons today, and WOU’s 10-7 win on Friday, the Wolves are now 1-2 on the season and UCSD is 2-1. In the first game, UCSD’s Matt Cantele hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the hosts a 5-1 lead. But the Tritons still had to survive a Wolves rally in the ninth, which included a two-run double by Paul Fisher. With two runners still on base, reliever Todd Gimenez fanned the final two batters of the game to secure the victory. Michael Thomson got the win for the Tritons, pitching six innings and allowing only four hits, while fanning six. Kevin Corrigan was the only WOU player with a pair of hits in the first game, including a solo home run in the fourth inning. Cantele and Garrett Imeson had two each for the Tritons. In the second game, Scott Clement gave the hosts the go-ahead runs with a two-run shot in the third inning, putting the Tritons up 4-3. That came on the heals of a three-run blast by WOU’s Boo Christenson in the third, but neither team would score again as UCSD held on for the win. Freshman Dan Straily took the loss for the Wolves on the mound. Reliever Kyle Bennett pitched three sterling innings of relief, allowing only one hit and no runs. Kirby St. John was the pitcher of record for the Tritons, going 5.1 innings, giving up five hits and striking out seven. The two clubs will wrap up a four-game series on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
