Pratt Leads Pacific at Northwest Open

The freshman claims top honors at 197 pounds to lead five Pacific placewinners at their own Northwest Open tournament.

FOREST GROVE - Kory Pratt's championship in the 197-pound weight class led the efforts of five Pacific placers in an abbreviated Northwest Open, held Sunday at the Pacific Athletic Center.

Pratt went 2-0 in the 197-pound weight class to claim top honors as all weights were run on a round-robin bracket.

A total of 31 wrestlers participated in six different weight classes.

Jake Reynolds finished third at 174 pounds and Josh Monge finished third at 197 pounds.

Trevor Arsenault finished fourth in the combined 141-149 pound bracket and Nathan Shay finished fifth in the same class.

Pratt earned top honors with a pair of close matches.

He scored the only takedown in his first match with Monge to score a 3-2 victory, and then needed only an escape to take a 1-0 victory over James Haclicki to win his second straight match over the Clackamas CC competitor.

Arsenualt opened the day by going 3-0 in Pool A of the 141-149 pound class, which included a first round pin of Clackamas' Nic Lockwood.

The junior stumbled in the semifinals, however, dropping a 5-1 decision to Cameron Arkills and before falling in the third place final, 13-4, to Oregon's Jack Goodrich.

The afternoon was a good one for Clackamas as the Cougars claimed three titles, two by their wrestlers and one by their coach.

Brian Jacobs went 4-0 to win the combined 125-133 pound bracket and John Bates went 4-0 to capture the heavyweight class.

Clackamas coach Josh Rhoden, who competed for Pacific in 2003-04, won the 174 pound class with a 2-1 record and two technical falls.

His only loss was a forfeit to one of his own wrestlers, Luis Cisneros.

Pacific assistant coach Troy Hall won the 157-pound weight class.

The two-time NCAA All-American at 157 pounds went 4-0 in the bracket, which included a 19-2 major decision over Jake Forsberg.

The Northwest Open was the last competition for Pacific during the regular season.

The Pacific starters will now focus on the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet, which takes place on Feb. 17th in Dubuque, Iowa.
