Feb-06-2007 05:42Oregon, Colorado Tied for Baja Classic LeadSalem-News.com SPORTSOregon senior Kim McCready shot her seventh round of 73 or better in 2006-07 Monday.
BAJA CALIFORNIA, Mexico - The No. 47-ranked University of Oregon women’s golf team led the field Monday after the first round of the Baja Classic held at the Bajamar Resort, while the second round was interrupted by fog and will be finished Tuesday morning. The Ducks were tied with Colorado at 298 after the first round, and remaining official team results and individual placings were unavailable. “I was very pleased how we played for the first round of the spring,” Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard said, “especially to shoot 298 on an unknown golf course in a tournament we have never been to. As a whole we played very solid.” Senior Kim McCready led Oregon with a 2-under 70 first round, and carded five birdies and three bogeys. The Placerville, Calif., native has led UO in five of her last eight rounds, including a school record 4-under 67 to cap the fall at Stanford last October. Other Duck scorers Monday included junior Victoria Wenslow (75) and freshmen Felicia Eastick (76) and Kate Hildahl (77), and sophomore Cathryn Bristow (81) rounded out UO’s contingent. Three Ducks also played as individuals Monday -- senior Therese Wenslow (81), sophomore Blair Ressler (81) and freshman Cathleen Ward (89). “We were playing on the four panoramic, oceanside holes when the fog rolled in,” Rouillard said, “and it was interesting to watch it cover everything -- we could barely see 10-20 yards ahead afterwards. Before the fog, the weather was very nice and in the high 70s.” Oregon is one of several highly-ranked teams in the 17-team field along with No. 37 Birmingham Southern, No. 39 Nebraska, No. 44 Louisville and No. 52 Memphis. Other teams on hand include Boise State, Colorado, East Carolina, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Northern Illinois, UNC Greensboro, Oral Roberts, UC Riverside, Southern Mississippi and Texas Tech. The Ducks look ahead to the remainder of the second round Tuesday morning, immediately followed by a final round of 18 holes.
