WOU Ends Three Game Slide With 4-2 Win

West Salem freshman Mike Cusick picks up win in first collegiate start.

Salem-News.com SPORTS

SEASIDE, Calif. - Western Oregon true freshman Mike Cusick threw eight sterling innings, helping his Wolves break a three-game losing streak while picking up a 4-2 over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Peter Aldrete Field in Seaside.

Cusick gave up only six hits, walked no one and fanned six in allowing just one earned run.

The former West Salem High School start was making his first collegiate appearance on the mound.

Western Oregon improved to 2-3 with the win, while the Otters dropped to 0-4.

Cusick received offensive help from another local product, former Central HS star David Navarette. The first baseman made his first start of the season and had three hits in four at-bats, including a pair of doubles.

Coubi Jiles added his second home run of the season and had two hits, while second baseman Pat Kelly went 2-for-2 with a triple.

The Wolves will continue their California road trip, taking on Sonoma State and San Francisco State twice each, Feb. 8th-10th.

SSU is up first on Thursday in Rohnert Park at 2:00 PM.
