Oregon's Sipe Shoots School Record 62

The third and final round of the UH Hilo Intercollegiate will be played Friday.

Sipe's 62 brokes Jimmy White's 63 in 2003.

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - Junior Derek Sipe set a University of Oregon school record by shooting a 62 Thursday at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate.

The Yorba Linda, Calif., native helped the Ducks shoot a 13-under 267 as Oregon climbed to fifth in the team standings following two rounds of play.

"Derek was just phenomenal today," said Oregon coach Casey Martin. "He really had it going with his putter and that was the whole key for him."

Sipe blistered the par-70, 6,738-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Course at eight shots below par during the second round. He broke the Oregon record of 63 set by Jimmy White at the 2003 Northwest Collegiate Classic.

For the tournament, Sipe sits at 9-under and in second place after 36 holes, just one shot behind Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale.

Tringale’s back-to-back 64s give him the one-shot lead over Sipe, who sits at 129.

Oklahoma’s Jonathan Moore finished the day in third at 130 after equaling Sipe’s 62. Georgia Tech’s Roberto Castro and USC’s Tom Glissmeyer round out the top five at 132 apiece.

Marcus Sostak carded a 3-under 67 for Oregon to move into a tie for 13th at 135.

Matt Ma and Joey Benedetti each had 69s and Zeke Reyna posted a 70. Sostak and Benedetti have each finished in the 60s in both rounds of play.

The Ducks, who were the first team off the course Thursday, used their 13-under par to climb from eighth a day ago into fifth place in the tournament after two rounds of play.

No. 3 Oklahoma State used a tournament-best 260 to take the 36-hole lead at 533. No. 2 Stanford and No. 20 Georgia Tech are locked in a tie for second, four shots off the pace at 537, followed by No. 25 Arizona State at 539 and then Oregon at 542.

Oregon State was sixth at 543 with No. 9 USC seventh at 545.

"We had a very good day as a team," said Martin. "I don’t know how it will stand up compared to everyone else, but I’m pretty pleased with what we shot today."
