HILO, Hawaii - The Oregon State men’s golf team is off to a scorching start to the spring season by firing a ten-under 270 on Wednesday.

The outstanding shooting leaves OSU in second place behind number one ranked Stanford on day one of the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational at Waikoloa Village Golf Club.

Sophomore Alex Williams led the Beavers with a team low of 4-under 66 that puts him in a seven way tie for third place and two shots off the lead.

“Alex played outstanding today,” said head coach Brian Watts. “We got him flown in late and he didn’t even get a practice round, so for him to give us that kind of a score is a great help. He made a lot of putts today and started real well. All he did all day way was give himself chances and he made the most out of it.”

Vincent Johnson finished the day in a seven way tie for tenth place by registering a 3-under 67.

“Vincent is back healthy, that is the most important thing,” said Watts. “He is in a good place mentally and physically. He came out and played well for us today and could have even been lower had he not had a few hiccups.”

The Beavers (270) head into the second day of competition two shots behind Stanford (268). Tee-times begin at 7:00 AM for OSU.

“Overall I was very pleased with the way our guys played today. We came here with the mind-set of competing and playing not to beat ourselves. We are giving ourselves chances right now by hitting greens and fairways.

“We are competing against a great field and we have a ways to go. There is a lot of golf to be played. Hopefully if we put some good golf together tomorrow we will be in a position to be where we need to be going into Friday.”
