WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The Oregon men’s golf team struggled in the final round of the UH Hilo Intercollegiate Friday, shooting an 11-over 291 to tie Texas Tech for 10th in the final standings. Duck junior Derek Sipe, whose school record 62 on Thursday left him one shot out of the lead heading into Friday’s final round, carded a 4-over 74 on the par-70, 6,738-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Course to finish the tournament tied for 12th at 7-under 203. Still it wasn’t all bad news for the Ducks, who recorded their best finish at Waikoloa since placing fourth in 2001. Junior Joey Benedetti shot a 71 to finish tied for 35th at 2-under 208, while freshman Marcus Sostak recorded a 73 to match Benedetti at 208. No. 2 Stanford won the team title in a playoff with third-ranked Oklahoma State. The two squads both finished at 37-under 803. No. 25 Arizona State was third at 816, with No. 20 Georgia Tech (818) and No. 8 USC (819) rounding out the top five. Washington took sixth at 821, while Oregon State and Texas Christian tied for seventh at 822. UC Davis placed ninth at 829, followed by Oregon and Texas Tech in 10th at 833. Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore shot a final round 65 to finish at 15-under 195 and win medalist honors by four strokes over Rob Grube of Stanford and Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech. The Ducks are next in action at the March 5th-6th Ashworth Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
