Feb-09-2007 05:03San Diego State Upsets No. 6 Oregon State, 1-0Salem-News.com SPORTSOSU opened the 2006 season with a 0-2 record before reeling off a school record 28-game winning streak.
SAN DIEGO - Freshman outfielder Brittany Knudsen hit a third inning lead-off home run to provide all of the scoring as San Diego State upset No. 6 ranked Oregon State, 1-0, in Thursday’s softball season opener at the San Diego State Tournament. The Beavers (0-1) dropped their second straight season opener by a 1-0 margin despite picking up five hits in the game – unfortunately they weren’t able to string the hits together in the same inning. “Overall we pressed a little bit offensively and tried to be too perfect,” said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. “We had some opportunities but we weren’t able to come up with the big hit when we needed it.” Beaver freshman outfielder Alana Ford finished with a 1-for-3 effort in her first career game, while Mia Longfellow, Brianne McGowan, Natalie Johnson and Cambria Miranda also had a hit each. McGowan continues her search for her 76th career victory. McGowan’s 75 wins rank in a tie for second place in the OSU career record book. The Reno, NV, native scattered three hits and had three strikeouts in the game. “Brianne pitched solid and was strong in the last few innings,” said Walker. The Beavers made several good plays defensively with Johnson coming up with some good catches in center field and Longfellow and Sherina Galvan playing solid in the infield. “We looked good on defense, but we were very tentative offensively,” said Walker. “We hope to change that tomorrow and come out more aggressive on the offensive end.” OSU opened the 2006 season with a 0-2 record before reeling off a school record 28-game winning streak. The Beavers return to tournament action on Friday at 11:30 AM against No. 23 ranked Massachusetts
