EUGENE - University of Oregon student-athlete Nicole Garbin is stepping away from the women’s basketball team in order to concentrate on her studies, head coach Bev Smith announced Tuesday.

Garbin, a senior guard who joined the basketball squad in November following a standout soccer career, filled a key role by providing UO’s relatively small roster with depth during practices.

“We completely understand and are supportive of Nicole’s decision,” Smith said. “She really helped us out when our numbers were down, bringing her competitive spirit, athleticism and a great attitude to the team.”

Given her course load and academic schedule, it would have been very difficult for Garbin to make all practices and road trips this term.

Garbin appeared in three games for the Ducks, totaling nine minutes of action.

With the recent addition of Australian freshman Victoria Kenyon, Oregon’s practice and travel squads will remain at 11 players.

The Ducks are home for a pair of Pac-10 contests this week.

Oregon faces Arizona on Thursday and No. 11 Arizona State on Saturday at McArthur Court.

Both games start at 7:00 PM.
