MONMOUTH - Western Oregon got 30 points from Leada Berkey and a solid second half comeback, but it wasn’t enough as Central Washington held on to claim a 76-65 women’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference win on Thursday night at the Physical Education Building.

The Wildcats improved to 10-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play, while Western Oregon dropped to 1-13 on the year and 0-3 in GNAC play.

CWU held a commanding 35-21 lead at halftime, but WOU roared back after the break.

Berkey, who had just seven points in the first 20 minutes, lit up the score board with 23 after the break.

The Wolves pulled to within six points (62-56) on a basket by Jordan Wilde with 3:46 left, but couldn’t cut the margin any closer than that.

Elyse Mengarelli had 19 points to lead a balanced CWU attack. Laura Wright added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Hannah Hull had 16 points.

Berkey’s 30 marked the fourth time this season that she has hit for 30 or more.

She hit five of nine three-point attempts..

Claire Carpenter had 12 points, hitting four of six trey opportunities.

WOU will now travel to Nampa, Idaho to take on Northwest Nazarene on Saturday night.
