No. 3 Gators Nip Oregon State

Gainesville, Fla. - Oregon State opened the 2007 season with a solid all-around performance and sophomore Jami Lanz was her usual steady self, finishing second in the all-around against No. 3 Florida Friday night.

The Beavers got off to a shaky start before steadying out and fighting to its solid season-opening score against the Gators losing 193.800-196.850.

Despite a pair of falls on the uneven bars during the first rotation, the Beavers’ score of 193.800 took OSU until week three to achieve in 2006.

“I’m excited about the promise this team showed tonight,” said head coach Tanya Chaplin. “They didn’t get down and kept working and fighting throughout the meet. We have a lot to improve on but I am happy with what this team did on its first time out there. We traveled a long way and this effort made it worth the trip.”

Lanz, despite having been sick most of the week, conducted business as usual scoring 9.825 on vault and floor and 9.750 on bars and 9.725 on beam to total a 39.125 in the all-around.

Oregon State freshmen Mandi Rodriguez and Laura-Ann Chong each performed in the all-around, scoring 38.450 and 38.350 respectively. Rodriguez tied for second on vault with a 9.850.

Notes:

Sophomore Tasha Smith did not travel to Gainesville after suffering a knee injury during Tuesday’s practice. Smith is considered week-to-week.

Redshirt freshman Brooke Barclay recorded the first score of her career after tearing the ACL in her right knee in last year’s season opener during her first routine.

Barclay scored 9.775 on vault and 9.625 on the beam.
