Jan-20-2007 21:21Seawolves Put Clamps on Wolves, 70-49Salem-News.com SPORTSAlaska Anchorage defense, Draper and Arts on offense lead UAA win.
MONMOUTH - Eric Draper and Carl Arts combined for 39 points leading the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 70-49 victory over Western Oregon on Saturday night at the Physical Education Building.
Draper had 21 and Arts 18 and the duo only missed six shots on the night between them. Meanwhile, UAA's defense held the Wolves to 28 points under its average as the No. 23 nationally ranked Seawolves improved to 12-4 on the year and to 3-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Western Oregon fell to 6-11 on the year and to 1-5 in league play.
Alaska Anchorage shot 56 percent from the field and hit 10 of 18 three-point attempts. Draper nailed five of six trey launches and was 7-for-8 from the field. Meanwhile, the Wolves shot just 37 percent from the field, including 3 of 15 from trey land. WOU also did not have anyone in double-figure scoring totals and was led by Jacob Mitchell's nine points and nine rebounds. Adonal Arrington and Travis Kuhns also had nine points each.
Both teams traded leads early, but back-to-back three-pointers by Draper gave the Seawolves a lead that they wouldn't give up again the rest of the first half. Draper had 14 points at the break, hitting four of five three-pointers and five of six shots from the field, helping the visitors to a 33-25 margin at halftime.
Draper hit a three-pointer to open up the second half, spurring the Seawolves on a 11-2 run. They would push that margin to 20 points (49-29) in the first six minutes after the break and would never again.
Western Oregon will remain home for just one game next week, hosting Northwest Nazarene on Thursday (7:30 PM).
