Jan-20-2007 19:25WOU Women Stun Western Washington, 84-77Salem-News.com SPORTSLeada Berkey posts 34 points as the Wolves win first GNAC game since 2005.
MONMOUTH - Leada Berkey tallied 34 points and Kori Seymour had 16 in the second half helping Western Oregon to 84-77 women's basketball upset over Western Washington on Saturday night at the Physical Education Building.
Berkey's scoring outburst marked the fifth time this season that the junior forward has scored 30 or more points in a game, tying a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record. Berkey also had nine rebounds and four assists. Seymour finished with 20 for the game.
The win snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Wolves and gave them their first conference win of the season. It was also the first GNAC victory for the Wolves since Feb. 12th of 2005. WOU improved to 2-14 on the year and to 1-4 in GNAC action. Western Washington fell to 11-5 on the season and to 4-2 in league action.
Krystal Robinson had a monster game for WWU with 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, while Mollie Stelmack added 18 points and Liz McCarrell 12.
The lead chaned hands 19 times in the game, but WOU led for most the contest. But neither team led by more than five points the entire game until Seymour's basket put the hosts up 62-55 with 6:45 to play. Kaila Hawley's trey put WOU on top 72-63 with 3:45 on the clock, and the Vikings were then forced to foul down the stretch.
The two squads traded leads seven times in the first half, and no team had a lead of more than four points. The Vikings led 33-29 with a minute left before intermission after a Willow Cabe three-pointer, but Berkey scored on a conventional three-point play and followed that up with a long trey to give the Wolves a 35-34 lead at the break. Berkey had 18 points in the first half, while Stelmack had 13 to lead the Viks.
The Wolves converted 26 of 32 free throws on the night (81 percent) and hit eight of 24 three-point attempts. WWU out-rebounded WOU 43-38 and had 22 boards on the offensive end.
Western Oregon will remain home next week, hosting Saint Martin's on Thursday and Seattle University on Saturday.
