Oregon State Wrestlers Sweep Weekend Duals

The Beavers face Arizona State and Boise State at home this weekend.

GREELEY, Colo. - Oregon State’s Ty Watterson won a matchup of nationally ranked heavyweights and six Oregon State wrestlers won both their matches Saturday as the 19th-ranked Beavers won a pair of non-conference wrestling duals.

OSU (11-1 overall, 3-0 Pac-10) won at Wyoming 32-6 in the afternoon, then took a victory at Northern Colorado 25-12 in the evening.

The Beavers return home next weekend for a pair of Pacific-10 duals. OSU hosts Arizona State on Friday at 7:00 PM, then Boise State next Sunday at noon.

Watterson, ranked 13th in this week’s National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, capped the meet against Northern Colorado (3-5) by taking a decision over 19th-ranked Reece Hopkin, 5-2; Watterson also scored a 15-6 major decision over Jason Still of Wyoming (1-6).

Watterson is 18-4 with six pins this season, and he climbed another notch on OSU’s list of all-time leaders in career wins as he’s in 41st place with 72 victories.

OSU 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs and 165-pounder Brett Arand both had a pin and a decision on the day, while 18th-ranked 174-pounder Jeremy Larson, 184-pounder Bressler and Watterson all had a major decision and a decision.

Beaver 197-pounder Travis Gardner won a decision and received a forfeit.

Larson decisioned Wyoming’s Bryan Bernal 10-6, then beat Northern Colorado’s Chase Walker 12-3; he is 20-5 with four pins this season.

Larson’s victories moved him onto OSU’s top 50 in career wins, with his 68 wins tying him for 47th place.

OSU’s Kyle Larson, ranked 19th at 141 pounds, lost the other match between nationally ranked wrestlers, being pinned by 14th-ranked Kenny Hashimoto in 1:03.

Larson had scored an early takedown, but Hashimoto came up with a reversal and took Larson to his back.

Larson had earlier earned an 8-2 decision over Wyoming’s Garrett Desmond; Larson is now 18-6 with seven pins this season.

Pfennigs stopped Wyoming’s Cory VomBaur in 3:50 for his fourth pin of the season.

He later beat UNC’s Blayze Bahe 7-1 to improve to 18-5 this season, and he’s won nine of his last 10 matches.

The pin was the 14th of Pfennigs’ career, moving him onto OSU’s all-time top 50 in that categorie in a tie for 47th place.
