Jan-28-2007 17:58Ducks Shuffle Lineup, Fall to Sun Devils, 27-14Salem-News.com SPORTSThe Ducks head out on the road to take on UC Davis and Stanford on Friday.
EUGENE - Shuffling their lineup due to an injury at 174 lbs., the Ducks fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 27-14, Sunday afternoon in a Pac-10 dual meet held at McArthur Court. Due to Ronnie Lee's fractured leg, the Ducks were forced to switch around their lineup a bit as freshman Zach Frazier got the start at 157 lbs., Kyle Bounds moved up to 165 lbs. and Jake McCoy wrestled at 174 lbs. Frazier, wrestling in his first Pac-10 dual match and against the No. 5 ranked 157 pounder in the nation, Brian Stith, battled hard but was ultimately overpowered by last years national runner-up. Stith collected the 14-4 major decision, his sixth major decision victory in his last seven matches and his eleventh straight victory overall. "We took the risk that we would switch around our guys and that they would rise to the occasion because we did not want to give up those six points at 174 lbs.," head coach Chuck Kearney said. "We'd rather give up as few points as possible and wrestle their top-ranked guy with someone young than give six free points to someone who we probably could beat." The Ducks once again got quality matches from the top of their lineup as Joey Lucas started off the night with a strategic 2-0 win over Shawn Jones. Senior Justin Pearch would follow the act, with an 11-5 decision at 141 lbs. in a more up tempo match. Jeremy McLaughlin got the 6-0 shutout victory to complete the Ducks early run and make the team score 9-0, picking up the decision over Chris Remsen. No. 5 ranked Brian Stith of Arizona State would stop the Ducks' run, however and the Ducks would not get another match win until Chris Dearmon collected a pin at the heavyweight position halfway through the third period in the penultimate match of the night against Quinton Pruett. Ryan Dunn would finish out the match in entertaining fashion, but would ultimately fall in a decision 6-2. Notes: Oregon was penalized a point for unsportmanlike conduct after an assistant coach rushed onto the floor prematurely to assist Kyle Bounds after he was pinned in the 165 lbs. match.
