Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro Euthanized

In January, Barbaro suffered a setback in his recovery due to complications in the laminitic hoof.


Barbaro was euthanized on Monday.

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was was euthanized on Monday after a long struggle for survival.

Co-owner Roy Jackson called the decision difficult but the right thing to do.

Barbaro was an American thoroughbred racehorse that decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby and was a heavy favorite in the Preakness Stakes.

On May 20th, 2006, he fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg shortly after the start of the race, an injury which not only ruined any chance of a Triple Crown win, but ultimately led to his demise.

The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries.

After initially favorable reports regarding its regarding the shattered leg, Barbaro developed an infection in the broken leg in early July, followed quickly by a severe case of laminitis in the sound hind leg.

Through the surgical removal of most of the laminitic hoof, aggressive pain management, and the use of a sling, Barbaro began a slow recovery.

By September 26th, 2006, Barbaro's prognosis was improving and his left hind hoof had grown about 18 millimeters in the heel.

On November 6th, 2006, the cast was removed and replaced with a bandage, a move that suggested that Barbaro's recovery was progressing well.

In January, Barbaro suffered a setback in his recovery due to complications in the laminitic hoof.
