Jan-30-2007 20:06Hawks Announce Game Worn Jersey Distribution PlanSalem-News.com SPORTSFollow the Portland Winter Hawks on Salem-News.com SPORTS.
PORTLAND - The Portland Winter Hawks will have three different opportunities for fans to purchase the actual jerseys that players have worn this season in games. As you may remember, the Winter Hawks wore a special edition “camouflage” jersey in a game on Saturday November 11th against Seattle in honor of Veterans’ Day. Veterans Memorial Coliseum, where the Hawks play most of their games, was dedicated on January 8th, 1961 to the “advancement of cultural opportunities for the community and to the memory of our veterans of all wars who made the supreme sacrifice.” All of the jerseys worn by the players in that November 11th game will be auctioned off to fans on Sunday March 4 when the Hawks host Seattle at 5:00 PM in the Rose Garden. The jerseys will be on display and a silent auction will be held through the second intermission of the game. Then, after the game, a final oral auction will be held for each game-worn jersey, and the fan with the highest bid will be able take their jersey home with them. A portion of the proceeds from this jersey auction will benefit a local, needy, veteran’s family. Then, on Saturday, March 17th against Seattle in the Rose Garden, the Hawks will be honoring the Portland Buckaroos of the original professional Western Hockey League. The team will wear jerseys that will bear the same design as the Buckaroos used to wear. During that game, while the Hawks are wearing the Buckaroo jerseys, one set of their regular jerseys worn all season will be available for fans to bid on. After the silent auction is completed at the end of the second intermission, there will be an oral auction immediately following the game and the fan with the highest bid on each jersey will be able to take their jersey home with them. Finally, the game-worn Buckaroo jerseys worn by the Winter Hawks for the Saturday March 17th game will be available for fans to purchase at the Hawks’ regular season home finale against the Spokane Chiefs on Sunday March 18th at 5:00 PM in Memorial Coliseum. The first 23 fans that submit a one-time payment of $150 at the Winter Hawks Team Store on the Coliseum concourse will receive a “grab bag” with a random jersey worn the night before. The doors open one hour before game time, at 4:00 PM. Fans can also purchase game-worn Winter Hawks jerseys from last year’s team during selected Hawks’ home games at the Major Junior Hockey Education Fund tables on the concourse of Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Garden. All proceeds provide college scholarship assistance to former Winter Hawks who do not sign professional contracts and local, amateur hockey players who apply for scholarship assistance and meet the qualifications.
