SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle University used a stifling defense and a deep bench to post a win in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball opener for both teams, 74-42 at the Connelly Center.

The victory improved Seattle’s overall record to 9-2 on the season, while WOU dropped to 1-11.

All 12 Seattle players scored in the ball game, led by the work off the bench of Ashley M. Brown who had 12.

Kamrica Ary-Turner added 10 points, while Carly Fromdahl had eight boards and Cassidy Murillo dished seven assits.

Leada Berkey led Western Oregon with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kori Seymour had nine points for the Wolves.

Western Oregon stayed within striking distance through the early parts of the first half, trailing just 8-5 eight minutes in.

But back-to-back three-pointers by Ashley Brown and Ashley Payne sent Seattle on a 12-0 run and the Redhawks would never lead by less than double digits again.

Nine different players scored for Seattle in the first half, including Ashley M. Brown’s eight points off the bench.

WOU shot just 36 percent from the field and hit only one of 12 three-point attempts. They also converted only 11 of 22 free throw attempts, and were outrebounded by the Redhawks, 54-27.

Western Oregon will now return home for a Saturday night contest at the Physical Education Building against Seattle Pacific.

Start time is 7:00 PM.
