Jan-06-2007 07:47Oregon State Shocks UCLA, 56-52Salem-News.com SPORTSOregon State broke a 5-game losing streak against UCLA and the Beavers picked up their first win in Pauley Pavilion since a 79-65 victory on Dec. 22nd, 2001.
LOS ANGELES - Oregon State’s women’s basketball team earned its first victory in Pauley Pavilion since 2001 when the Beavers stunned UCLA, 56-52, on Friday night. Oregon State (6-6; 1-2 Pac-10) outscored UCLA (8-9; 2-3 Pac-10) by a 17-14 margin over the game’s final eight minutes to hold on to the victory. Senior guard Casey Nash sparked the OSU offense by scoring 10 straight points to open the second half and helped the Beavers build a 31-26 lead. The Bruins cut the lead to one point (39-38) with 8:32 left, but Ashley Allen buried a 3-pointer from the left corner to answer and keep UCLA at bay. For the second straight game OSU had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Nash’s 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Judie Lomax buried all five of her field goal attempts for 11 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to register her sixth career double-double. Mercedes Fox-Griffin added 11 points – including a 9-for-10 mark from the free throw line – and dished out five assists, while Allen chipped in 10 points. UCLA All-American Noelle Quinn led the Bruins with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Neither team shot well in the opening 20 minutes. The Bruins managed just a 35-percent effort while the Beavers shot 39-percent. Nash connected on just 3-of-10 field goals for OSU in the opening frame and Quinn hit a running 3-pointer at the buzzer to give UCLA a 24-21 lead at intermission. Oregon State returns to the court on Sunday with a 2:00 PM start against USC at the Galen Center.
