Jul-12-2006 22:36OSU’s Taylor Set to Play for England’s Nordic Cup TeamSalem-News.com SPORTS
CORVALLIS - Jodie Taylor, a standout on the Oregon State women’s soccer team, will be playing for her native England at the Nordic Cup, which begins this weekend. The Nordic Cup, held in Norway from July 16th-22nd, is an eight-team event that is the top annual competition for under-21 women’s teams. This is Taylor’s third stint with England’s U-21 team this year. She previously traveled home for camps and friendlies in January and May. England is in Group B and will play Finland on July 16th, Sweden on July 18th and Germany on July 20th. The championship, third-place game, fifth-place game and seventh-place game will all be held on July 22. Group A consists of the United States, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. Taylor (Merseyside, England) is the only player on England’s 18-woman squad that currently plays collegiately in the United States. The other 17 play for clubs in England. As a 2005 sophomore, Taylor led the Beavers in all offensive categories with 10 goals, six assists, 26 points, 61 shots and four game-winning goals. Her two-year career totals of 25 goals and 58 points already both rank fourth in OSU’s record book. Taylor is the first Oregon State player to earn two-time All-Pac-10 first team honors. She earned Soccer Buzz All-West Region second team and NSCAA All-West Region third team honors in both 2004 and 2005, and was the Pac-10’s Freshman of the Year in 2004. This summer, Taylor has been playing with the Boston Renegades in the W-League. The United States has won seven straight Nordic Cups, and eight of the last nine.
