Volcanoes Howard, Walker to Coach Blanchet High School Baseball Team

Well-known team owner plans to teach the high school players a few things.

SALEM - Jerry Walker, co-owner of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes has been named the varsity head baseball coach at Blanchet Catholic School.

Walker has been a minor league executive for 18 seasons.

This is Walker’s 10th season in Keizer with the Volcanoes.

Walker ran the Bellingham Giants and Bellingham Mariners prior to moving to franchise here and building Volcanoes Stadium in 1997.

Volcanoes marketing executive Jerry Howard will assist Walker.

Howard’s past baseball experience includes twenty-five years as a professional, collegiate and high school baseball umpire, eleven years as an American Legion baseball coach and fourteen years as a Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays Associate Scout.

Howard was also the head baseball coach for Cottage Grove and McKenzie High Schools.

Blanchet’s varsity baseball program is in its sixth year.

The team has qualified for the district playoffs twice in their history.

Blanchet has fielded a junior varsity team for the past two years and participated in summer league for the first time this year.

Walker said, “This is a great opportunity to be a part of a respected institution and work with some great people. Baseball has been my life-long passion and I look forward to working to create the best baseball program possible at Blanchet.”
