Jul-30-2007 10:30Babe of Women's Golf Natalie Gulbis Wins Evian MastersSalem-News.com SPORTSMexico’s Lorena Ochoa, Korea’s Ji-Yai Shin and America’s Juli Inkster tied for 3rd place.
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France - The 4th and final round of the Evian Masters lived up to all expectations. Under the sun, the best women players in the world set about the course with the firm intention of winning, not letting up until the final victory by Natalie Gulbis in a playoff. The course remained ruthless, made even more difficult by the sun and wind and the devilish greens, and the players had to give their utmost to make it to the top of the leader board. We witnessed a lot of too-ing and fro-ing amongst the leaders. Lorena Ochoa got off to a great start to make a new appearance on the leader board as did Christina Kim, Sophie Gustafson, Annika Sorenstam, Momoko Ueda (Evian Masters 2007 ambassador) and Natalie Gulbis, who birdied 3 holes on the front 9. Juli Inkster was also part of the leading group during this final. The suspense was gripping, with hole n 18 playing a key role. Lorena Ochoa was the first to suffer the consequences. On -4, the world number 1 three-putted the hole to drop back to -3, behind Natalie Gulbis who finished her round on -4. In the lead, the American beauty returned to the putting green and driving range whilst waiting for her main rivals to finish. It was at that point that Sophie Gustafson also tripped up on the 18th. Lying in first place on -4, the Swede lost all of her chances to win by hitting the ball in the water. All eyes turned to the last twosome, Juli Inkster and Jeong Jang, who held all the cards: the American’s three putts deprived her of the play-off while the Korean shot a birdie to return to the 18th with Natalie Gulbis. One hole was enough for Natalie Gulbis to claim her first victory, at the Evian Masters 2007 and on the American tour. A superb final and a dream podium to endorse the new sporting format of the ever-increasingly international Evian Masters: the American Natalie Gulbis takes first place ahead of Korea’s Jeong Jang. Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa, Korea’s Ji-Yai Shin and America’s Juli Inkster tied for 3rd place.
