SPOKANE, Wash. - A sold out crowd of 7,066 was on hand during the Spokane Indians season opener against the Eugene Emeralds on June 19th.

And despite a 6-2 loss for the home team, fans still had a lot to cheer about with the dedication of the new Rim of Honor that celebrated some of the most important individuals in the Indians 104-year history, and a post-game fireworks show that was a definite wow.

Eugene utilized a five-run inning in the top of second and the Indians answered right back in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs thanks to a infield single by third baseman Johan Yan that drove in first baseman Ian Gac, and an RBI by centerfielder Steve Murphy.

However that would be the only offensive output of the night.

Starting pitcher Fabio Castillo picked up the loss for the Indians, giving up five runs over five innings pitched.

Right-handed pitcher Keisuke Ueno came in and pitched two and two thirds innings of near perfect relief, giving up only one hit.

Then the combination of Derek Holland, Chris Dennis and Jose Jaimes finished the game for Spokane.

The Emeralds were unable to score an earned run in the final six frames, but in the top of the seventh, Indians’ catcher Billy Killian made a throwing error on a steal attempt, bringing Eugene’s designated hitter Daniel Payne home.

It proved to be a deficit that the Indians couldn’t overcome in the latter innings.

The two clubs meet again tonight at 6:30 pm.
