Jun-23-2007 07:41Emeralds Beat Indians 5-3 in Extra InningsSalem-News.com SPORTSSattler (0-1) took the loss for the Indians while Chris Perez (1-0) picked up the win for Eugene.
SPOKANE, Wash. - It was a packed house of 7,053 at Avista Stadium, but the Spokane Indians just couldn’t hold on in extra innings and dropped a tight 5-3 contest to the visiting Eugene Emeralds. Indians’ second baseman Renny Osuna continued his hot streak at the plate with a single in the bottom of the first, and then reached second on an overthrow but it was Victor Barrios with the home run this time, giving Spokane the 2-0 lead. Barrios hit .307 last year for the Arizona League Rangers with 23 RBIs and two home runs. So far this season he’s been hitting .250 in the three games he’s played in. A shot down the right field line yielded a triple for Indian’s catcher Billy Killian in the second inning, but Spokane couldn’t capitalize on his extra base hit, giving Eugene a chance to strike back in the top of the third. Emerald’s shortstop Ray Stokes grounded into a fielder’s choice with runners at the corners to make it 2-1. And that’s how the score remained until the top of the seventh when Emeralds’ catcher Tim Martinez doubled to left and then centerfielder Luis Durango drove him home with another double. A pop-fly error by the Indians led to another run, giving Eugene the 3-2 lead. Barrios provided the scoring for the Indians again in the bottom of the eighth, with an RBI infield single to bring home centerfielder Kyle Murphy and tie the game up. He would finish the game 2-4 with one home run and all of Spokane’s three RBI’s. The game would go into extra innings and that’s where Eugene would sneak away with the victory. With relief pitcher Daniel Sattler on the mound for the Indians in the 10th, Stokes started the 10th frame off with a triple and then leftfielder Daniel Payne drove him home. Then after a ground out, first baseman Zachary Brown lined to center and advanced Payne to 3rd. Right fielder Keith Conlon then hit into a ground out but Payne was able to score the second run of the inning. Spokane couldn’t answer back in the bottom of the frame, and Eugene came away with its third victory of the season. Sattler (0-1) took the loss for the Indians while Chris Perez (1-0) picked up the win for Eugene.
