CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State had three players selected Wednesday during the first day of the Major League Baseball amateur draft, with all three Beavers being taken in the first four rounds.

All three are juniors and will be playing for No. 25-ranked OSU when the Beavers host Michigan in the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional this Saturday through Monday (June 9-11) at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Righthanded pitcher Eddie Kunz (Portland, Ore./Parkrose HS) went in the first round to the New York Mets; he was the 42nd player taken overall.

“Getting the draft over is a relief,” said Kunz. “Everything can be focused on Michigan now. I feel good about where I went, I feel like I’m in pretty good company, but now it’s time to play Michigan, hopefully we beat them up a little bit and have some fun.”

Catcher Mitch Canham (Lake Stevens, Wash. /Lake Stevens HS) went in the first round to the San Diego Padres; he was the 57th player taken overall.

“I’m glad I went where I did to the Padres,” said Canham. “I love the organization and the way they treat their players. I had no idea where I was going to go, but I’m glad it’s over so I don’t have to think about it anymore. No more distractions from scouts.”

Shortstop Darwin Barney (Beaverton, Ore. /Southridge HS) went in the fourth round to the Chicago Cubs; he was the 127th player taken overall.

OSU has had three first round draft pick over the last three seasons (Jacoby Ellsbury in 2005) and this draft is the first time in OSU history the Beavers have had two first round draft picks in the same year.
