Three More Beavers Selected on Day 2 of MLB Draft

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three more Oregon State players, all pitchers, were selected Friday during the second day of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.

In all, six Beavers were selected in the two-day, 50-round draft.

On Wednesday, right-handed pitcher Daniel Turpen (McMinnville, Ore. /McMinnville HS) went in the eighth round to the San Francisco Giants; he was the 254th player taken overall.

Right-handed pitched Mike Stutes (Lake Oswego, Ore. /Santa Clara U. /Lake Oswego HS) went in the ninth round to the St. Louis Cardinals; he was the 292nd player taken overall.

Left-handed pitcher Joe Paterson (McMinnville, Ore. /Linfield Coll. /McMinnville HS) was taken in the tenth round to the San Francisco Giants; he was the 314th player taken overall. All three pitchers are juniors.

OSU had three players selected during the first day, two of which were first round selections.

Right-handed pitcher Eddie Kunz (Portland, Ore./Parkrose HS) went in the first round to the New York Mets; he was the 42nd player taken overall.

Catcher Mitch Canham (Lake Stevens, Wash. /Lake Stevens HS) went in the first round to the San Diego Padres; he was the 57th player taken overall.

Shortstop Darwin Barney (Beaverton, Ore. /Southridge HS) went in the fourth round to the Chicago Cubs; he was the 127th player taken overall.

OSU has had three first round draft pick over the last three seasons (Jacoby Ellsbury in 2005) and this draft is the first time in OSU history the Beavers have had two first round draft picks in the same year.
