Mar-10-2007 17:44Thunderbirds Defeat Corban, 4-1Salem-News.com SPORTSWith the loss, Corban falls to 5-11-1 overall.
SALEM - Freshman Josh Warner drove in the Warriors' lone run on an RBI double in the 8th inning, but Corban's baseball team allowed four runs in the third inning and fell, 4-1, to the Thunderbirds of British Columbia on Saturday. Corban senior starting pitcher Brett Timmerman began the game getting the first to T-birds via strikeouts, but got roughed up a little in the third inning. Neither team got on the scoreboard until the third inning when the visiting Thunderbirds put their lone four runs on the board via five straight hits. UBC's Brett Murray, Nic Lendvoy, Fletcher Vynne, Brendan Kornberger, and Sean Everest accounted for the UBC hits during the stretch, while Vynne and Everest knocked in runs with a double and single respectively. Tyler Willson brought home the Thunderbirds' final run of the inning and ball game via a sacrifice fly to right field that scored pinch-runner Craig Leebosh from third. Timmerman pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing all four UBC runs (all earned) on 10 hits, before giving way to senior reliever Scott Fitchett for the final 2.2 innings of work. Heading into the 8th inning, Corban had recorded a mere three hits on the day, but doubled its hit total in the next-to-last stanza. The Warriors scored their lone run when Warner double down the left field line following a single to right center by junior Scott Flux and a bunt single by junior Jamie McGraw. Senior Ryan Heil loaded the bases with two outs after battling with UBC's starting pitcher Brendan Rolfe before being hit by the pitch. Senior Jeremy Frantz grounded into an inning ending double play that put an end to any threat that Corban had mounted during the stanza. Fitchett held UBC scoreless in the final inning, before the Thunderbirds moved starting third baseman Murray from his corner position onto the mound for the final three outs of the game. Murray retired the Warriors 1-2-3 in the 9th inning en route to picking up his second save of the weekend. UBC's Rolfe picked up the victory going 8.0 solid innings, allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits, while striking out four Warrior hitters. Timmerman was strapped with the loss, his third of the season, while McGraw led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance. UBC was led by Vynne with a 3-for-4 performance with 2 runs batted in and a run scored, while Lendvoy and Everest each had 2-for-4 days at the plate. With the loss, Corban falls to 5-11-1 overall, 1-5 in Region I action. Meanwhile, British Columbia moves to 3-6 overall, 2-1 in Region I play. The Warriors return to the field on Tuesday, March 13th, against NCAA Division III member Pacific (Ore.) beginning at 6:00 PM at Hillsboro Stadium.
