Mar-14-2007 05:03Western Oregon Takes Two From CorbanSalem-News.com SPORTSThe Wolves set a team record for most runs in a game during a 22-2 win.
SALEM - Tyler Sutherland hit a grand slam homer and drove in five runs in a 5-4 first-game win, and then all the Wolves got into the hitting act in game two as WOU raced to a mercy rule 22-2 victory over Corban in non-conference softball action on Tuesday at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem. With the wins, WOU improved to 7-9 on the year while Corban fell to 1-7-1. The Wolves have now won seven of their last nine games after a 0-7 start. The Wolves set a team record for most runs in a game during the 22-2 win. Sutherland’s base clearing four-bagger rallied the Wolves from a 2-1 deficit in the top of the seventh in the opener. The Warriors then put together a rally of their own when Siriana Guest mashed a two-run shot in the bottom half of the inning to pull Corban to within one run at 5-4. Lindsay Batey followed with a single but WOU pitcher Christina Cooke fanned the final batter of the game to halt the rally. Sutherland was 3-for-4, with three of WOU’s four hits against hardluck loser Erin Sailors. Cooke got the win, allowing only two earned runs and scattering nine hits. Megan Lamson went 3-for-4 for the Warriors to lead their hit parade. In the second game, the Wolves scored eight runs in the first inning, five funs in the second and seven in the third to put the game away early. In the five inning contest, WOU had 18 hits, four of them by Melissa Wilson. Wilson and Amanda Fleer each had five RBI, and Fleer had a home run. In total, seven WOU players had at least two hits in the game. Brianne Dieringer went all five innings, allowing just five hits and the two earned runs to get the win. Jennifer Childers had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Warriors. Western Oregon will continue non-league play with a Wednesday home doubleheader against Concordia (2:30 PM).
