CORVALLIS - Junior right-hander Mandy Hill recorded two wins in relief to lead Portland State to a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at OSU Softball Complex on the third day of the Cascade Clash. The Vikings defeated Utah State 3-1 in eight innings and then edged South Dakota State 4-3 to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record. In addition to picking up both wins, Hill went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate, including recording four RBI in the win over the Jackrabbits. Portland State will return to action Friday when the Vikings face Ohio University and UC Davis at the Stanford Invitational. First pitch against the Bobcats is scheduled for 11:00 AM. GAME 1: PORTLAND STATE 3, UTAH STATE 1 (8 INNINGS) Sophomore first baseman Jana Rae Slayton and sophomore second baseman Jackie Heide hit back-to- back two-out, RBI singles to break a 1-1 tie as Portland State defeated Utah State 3-1 in eight innings. Junior right-hander Mandy Hill (8-10) pitched seven scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, allowing two hits and no walks. She also tied a season high with nine strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Lindsey Benson (5-4) was charged with the loss. She allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits and one walk, while striking out six in eight innings. Heide finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. She had a two- out RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Hill, Slayton, and senior third baseman Katie Stokes also had two hits each as Portland State held a 9-3 advantage in hits. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman left fielder Emily Reilly reached on a lead-off walk and later came around to score on a wild pitch. GAME 2: PORTLAND STATE 4, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 3 Hill went 2-for-3 with four RBI and also pitched seven innings of relief to earn the win in the Vikings’ 4-3 victory over the Jackrabbits (9-11). Hill hit her sixth home run of the year with a three- run shot in the first inning to give Portland State a 3-0 lead. After South Dakota State tied the game at 3-3, Hill hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to score junior center fielder Laura Segall and make it 4-3. Hill (9-10) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five to earn the decision. Junior right-hander Kim Westendorf (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on hits and walked none in seven innings of work. She also struck out two. Heide, junior left fielder Kimi Daniel, freshman catcher Brandi Scoggins, Segall all had two hits each as the Vikings out-hit the Jackrabbits 10-5. Sophomore right fielder Brittany Postma went 2-for-3 with a triple to lead South Dakota State at the plate. The Jackrabbits plated a run in the first, third and fourth innings to tie the game at 3-3.
