Mar-17-2007 20:03GNAC Softball: Wolves Split Games at Al Cooper TournamentSalem-News.com SPORTSWestern Oregon falls to Lumberjacks, edge Seawolves.
ARCATA, Calif. - Whitney Lee singled home Shanley Young with the winning run in the sixth inning, giving Western Oregon a narrow 7-6 win over Sonoma State in the late game of the Al Cooper Tournament, hosted by Humboldt State. The Wolves dropped their opening contest of the day to No. 9 nationally ranked Humboldt State, 9-3. Sonoma State also lost to HSU (7-1). With the split, Western Oregon is now 10-10 on the year, while Sonoma State dropped to 13-19. The Lumberjacks are 21-3. The Wolves will play both squads again on Sunday before returning home. No other details were available at press time in regards to WOU’s win over Sonoma State. In the first game of the day, Humboldt State’s Natalie Galletly knocked a pair of home runs over the center field fence, leading the Lumberjacks to a 9-3 win over Western Oregon at the Al Cooper Softball Tournament. Carolyn Cameron led off the contest with a double and Caitlin Klug followed with a single before Galletly sent a long ball over the fence for a 3-0 Lumberjack lead. Marissa Slattery had an RBI double later in the inning to give Humboldt four first-inning runs. The Jacks added three runs in the second, two on a single by Megan Sutherland and one on a single by Slattery, and two more in the third on Galletly’s second homer to take a 9-0 advantage, easily providing all the scoring that the hosts would need in the contest. After relief pitcher Hannah Mullen-Jones game up a two-run home run to the Wolves’ Melissa Wilson, HSU’s starting pitcher Lizzy Prescott reentered the game and preserved her 12th victory of the year. Prescott recorded six strikeouts while giving up just two hits and no earned runs. Tyler Sutherland had two of WOU’s four hits in the game.
