Mar-18-2007 20:28GNAC Softball: Wolves Fall Twice at Humboldt State TourneySalem-News.com SPORTSWestern Oregon drops games to HSU and Sonoma State.
ARCATA, Calif. - No. 9 nationally ranked Humboldt State raced to a 9-1 win over Western Oregon and Sonoma State won a 9-6 slugfest with the Wolves on the final day of the Al Cooper Tournament at the HSU Softball Field in Arcata on Sunday. WOU, who split with the same two teams on Saturday, will return home with a 10-12 overall record. They will be idle through finals week, and will next play at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., March 30th-April 1st. Humboldt State pounded out 12 hits in the six inning contest in improving to 23-3 on the season in the 9-1 win. Natalie Galletly drove in three of the Lumberjack’s runs with a pair of hits, while Tracy Motzny improved to 11-2 in the pitcher’s circle. Motzny allowed just four hits and fanned five batters. Melissa Wilson provided WOU’s only score with a solo home run in the sixth to break-up the shutout. Sonoma State jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the top of the third inning against WOU, although the Wolves battled back with a five-run bottom of the third. WOU had six hits in that inning, including doubles by Shanley Young and Amanda Fleer. But the Seawolves would come right back with three runs in the fourth and Western Oregon could only muster one more unearned run in the game. Sonoma State’s Alex Winters went 4-for-4 in the contest to help her team improve to 14-19, while Ashley Eiseman added a three-run homer.
Fleer had two hits for WOU, while Whitney Lee was a perfect 3-for-3. Young added two hits for the Wolves, who had 11 in the game.
