Oregon's Eaton Wins Jim Click Decathlon

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Oregon freshman Ashton Eaton won his collegiate multi-event debut Friday in second and final day action in the Jim Click Shootout decathlon.

Eaton totaled 6,977 points to meet the NCAA provisional standard of 6,900 points, and edged Nick Adcock of Missouri (second, 6,612) and Frank Shotwell of Michigan (third, 6,353).

The Bend, Ore., native Eaton posted second day marks of 14.92 in the 110m hurdles (w:0.9), 124-5 (37.93m) in the discus, 12-3 1/2 (3.75m) in the pole vault, 110-4 (33.65m) in the javelin and 4:56.62 in the 1,500m.

Eaton entered Friday with a 104-point lead after he scored 4,016 points Thursday in the first half of the competition, and led unattached entrant and former World Championships qualifier Paul Terek (second, 3,910 points).

Freshman teammate William Pua’a held onto ninth place Friday with a score of 5,443 points in second-day action at the University of Arizona.

The Kula, Hawaii native posted second-day marks of 16.47 in the 110m hurdles (w:0.7), 87-2 (26.58m) in the discus, 11-3 3/4 (3.45m) in the pole vault, 103-1 (31.43m) in the javelin and 5:08.33 in the 1,500m.

In the women’s heptathlon, Duck freshman Erin Funkhouser climbed two spots in the overall standings Friday and finished in seventh place (4,441).

Funkhouser’s second day marks included 16-0 1/2 (4.89m, w:-1.4) in the long jump, 114-0 (34.77m) in the javelin and 2:19.26 in the 800m.

Overall in the women’s heptathlon, Bettie Wade of Michigan exactly met the NCAA automatic standard (first, 5,500), and beat unattached entrant Dani NcNaney (second, 5,453) and Julianne Kennedy of Texas Tech (third, 5,147).
