TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman Ashton Eaton led a trio of University of Oregon freshmen who made their collegiate multi-event debuts Thursday in first-day track and field action in the Jim Click Shootout decathlon and heptathlon.

The Bend, Ore., native Eaton led the decathlon at the halfway point with a score of 4,016 points, and was followed by post-collegian and former World Championships qualifier Paul Terek who stood second with 3,910 points after five events.

UO’s other entrant, freshman William Pua’a stood ninth with 2,975 points.

Eaton’s first-day marks follow: 100m - 10.66 (w:1.5), Long Jump – 23-7 1/4 (7.19m, w:0.2), Shot Put – 38-8 1/4 (11.79m), High Jump – 6-3 1/2 (1.92m) and 400m – 48.55.

Puaa’s marks follow: 100m – 11.38; Long Jump – 20-11 1/4 (6.03m), 32-0 3/4 (9.77m), High Jump – 5-3 3/4 (1.62m) and 400m – 53.69.

In the women’s heptathlon, Funkhouser ranked ninth with a score of 2,510 points after four events.

The Grass Valley, Ore., native posted marks of 15.95 in the 100m hurdles, 4-11 3/4 (1.52m) in the high jump, 28-11 3/4 (8.83m) in the shot put and 27.23 in the 200m.

Overall in the heptathlon, a pair of NCAA indoor pentathlon qualifiers – Bettie Wade of Michigan and Julianne Kennedy of Texas Tech – stood first and second overall with scores of 3,451 and 3,227 points, respectively.

“It was a pretty good first-day effort considering they’re all freshmen making their debuts,” Duck assistant coach Kelly Blair LaBounty said. “Ashton competed extremely well, and had a PR in the 100m, and is leading a great athlete in Terek. William and Erin have some room to improve, but you expect some ups and downs the first time around. All in all they’re competing well.”

Complete results will be posted eventually at the University of Arizona’s www.ArizonaAthletics.com website.

Looking ahead, the trio return for multi-event second day duty Friday, and several of UO’s hammer throwers open duty in the Arizona State University Invitational Friday afternoon.
