CCC Baseball: Concordia Routs Corban, 11-1

SALEM - Senior Kyle Myers drove in the Warriors' lone run in the ninth inning, as Corban's baseball team dropped the first game of a scheduled double header, 11-1, to the Cavaliers of Concordia on Saturday at Warrior Field before the rains set in and cancelled the second game.

Down by eleven runs, the host Warriors came to bat in the final inning and pinch hit for four of the first five batters with junior Doug Gausepohl reaching base on a walk and freshman Zack James reaching via a single.

Sophomore Rondie Taylor pinch-ran for Gausepohl and moved up ninety feet, along with James, via a wild pitch before Myers drove in Taylor on a miscommunication pop up in front of home plate for Corban's lone run of the ball game.

Concordia began the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs before tacking on another two runs in the third inning and a single run in the fourth.

The Cavaliers' bats came alive in the sixth inning when Concordia scored six runs on five hits and blew the game wide open.

Junior starter Jordan Emery went the first 4.0 innings and allowed 5 runs (all earned) on 10 hits before giving way to a pair of relievers.

Seniors Zeke Clayton and Scott Fitchett combined to throw the final 3.0 innings, allowing 6 runs (all earned) on 7 hits, while combining to strike out one Cavalier batter.

Besides Myers and James, four other Warriors -- Gausepohl, junior Scott Flux, junior Darren Johnson, and freshman Josh Warner -- collected a hit each off Cavalier pitching.

Concordia's Kyle Waterland led the Cavaliers' bats with a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while James Mannion and Cody Herrick registered three and two hits respectively.

Herrick and Casey McLeod drove in a game-high three runs each, while Mannion and Mike Hall registered 2 RBIs apiece.

On the mound for the Cavaliers, Kyle Corwin went the distance and allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits with a game-high 5 strikeouts.

With the loss, Corban falls to 10-17-1 overall, 4-10 in Region I play.

Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 10-14 on the season, 7-7 in Region I action.

The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday, April 3rd, when they host cross-town rivals and NCAA Division III member Willamette beginning at 3:00 PM on Warrior Field in the first game of the inaugural three-game Governor's Cup series.

NOTE: The make-up game between Corban and Concordia has been tentatively scheduled as part of a double header on Sunday, May 6th, in Portland with a time still to be determined.
