Cal Ends Oregon State`s Season

Ryan Anderson scored a career-high 27 points, hitting half of California's 12 3-pointers, and the Golden Bears defeated Oregon State 70-51 Wednesday night in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament at Staples Center.

The eighth-seeded Golden Bears (15-16) advanced to play No. 1 seed UCLA (26-4) in Thursday's quarterfinals - a rematch of last year's title game, won by the Bruins on their way to a runner-up finish in the national championship game.

Marcel Jones led the Beavers (11-21) with 21 points, their only player in double figures. They lost all three meetings with Cal, which has won 18 of its last 20 games with the Beavers.

Having set a school record for 3-pointers with 235, the Bears made a bunch more against Oregon State. Ayinde Ubaka chipped in two and has 53 on the season, while Anderson's effort gave him 56. They are the first Cal duo to make at least 50 in the same season.

Anderson, the Pac-10's leading freshman scorer with a 15.9 average, bettered his previous career high of 25. His 15 rebounds were one off his career best.

Cal opened the game shooting 25 percent as Oregon State raced to a 13-6 lead. Then the Bears caught fire, outscoring the Beavers 34-2, including 25 in a row, before closing out the half ahead 43-25.

The Bears hit eight 3-pointers in the spurt.

Oregon State came out strong to start the second half, using a 14-4 run to get within eight. A missed 3-point attempt c0ould have made it a five-point game. A 3-pointer by Vojin Svilar drew the Beavers within eight again before Omar Wilkes scored six in a row to push the Bears' lead to 58-44.

Oregon State finished next-to-last in the regular-season with three conference victories. Cal managed just six wins a year after losing Pac-10 player of the year Leon Powe to the NBA draft.
