MINNEAPOLIS - OSU sophomore Saori Haruguchi set the school record in the 100-yard butterfly (53.17) during Friday morning’s preliminary round for the Oregon State swim team.

Haruguchi was 11th after the prelims and finished 11th overall (53.28), earning All-American honors for the second year in a row.

Haruguchi finished sixth in the 200 fly last season to earn the award.

Haruguchi’s time of 53.28 in the finals is the second fastest in school history.

OSU sits in 32nd place with six heading into the final day of competition.

Arizona is in first place overall.

“Today was a real good day,” said OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz. “Saori (Haruguchi) did a phenomenal job and continues to excel in her second year with the program.”

In other individual action, both Anna Crandall and Brittney Iverson raced in the 200 freestyle.

Crandall finished 64th with a time of 1:50.61 and was followed by Iverson in 65th with a time of 1:50.71.

The most anticipated event of the day for OSU was the 800 free relay.

The foursome of Haruguchi, Crandall, Kayla Rawlings, and Iverson placed 16th (7:17.90).

The relay team made school history by qualifying for the NCAA Championships and they clearly did not disappoint on the national stage.

Haruguchi, swimming the opening leg of the 800 free relay, recorded a time of 1:48.78.

The time is equivalent to a swim in the 200 free and it just falls short of the school record time of 1:48.67 Haruguchi swam in the 800 free relay at the Pacific-10 Championships last month.

“It’s the first time we’ve had a relay in the NCAA Championships and the swimmers did real well,” said Liebowitz. “It’s real special what they have done this season and I am real excited for tomorrow.”

In the final day of tomorrow’s championships both Haruguchi and Rawlings will be in action for the Beavers.

Haruguchi and Rawlings will both swim in the 200 fly.
