SALEM, Ore. - Upcoming Corban College seniors Caleb Louvier and Joshua Crain recently signed to compete this summer with the Cascade Surge, the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League franchise based in Salem.

After garnishing 2006 All-American Honorable Mention, All-Region I, and All-Cascade Collegiate Conference honors following a 12 goal and six assist season as a Warrior, Louvier prepares for his final season on Warrior Field by putting on a Surge jersey.

Crain comes to the Surge after being listed on the All-CCC second team after notching 7 goals and 8 assists during the 2006 season as a Warrior. Like Louvier, this will be Crain’s first summer competing in the PDL.

These two offensive threats will reunite on the pitch with former Corban defenders and Surge veterans Michael Otto (2002–05) and James Young (2003–06).

Other Surge ties to Corban College include Mike Speten (1992–96), Brian Spaulding (1994–97), Corban men’s and women’s goal keeper coach Tim Farr (2006–Current), and Corban men’s head coach Dave Irby (2006–Current).

Otto rejoins the Surge after returning from Annapolis, Brazil where, through Vanguard Ministries, he worked with a church and attended practices with a highly competitive local team.

Young returns to the Cascade Surge after traveling to both Tecata, Mexico and Stuttgart, Germany last summer where he worked with an orphanage, a youth prison, and helped run a soccer camp. Both players were named to respective All-CCC teams during their stints with Corban.

Speten was recently hired by the Surge as its Vice President of Development and is in charge of organizing events and programs in which the Surge team will be involved in throughout the summer.

He was an All-American defender at Corban and helped lead the team to the 1997 National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Championship.

Spaulding joined the Surge staff for this summer as its assistant coach and Camp and Youth Director.

He will facilitate several youth soccer camps throughout Marion County over the summer and have opportunity to mentor some of the players along the way. Spaulding was also part of Corban’s NCCAA title run in 1997.

Farr brings both playing and coaching experience to the Surge.

At the age of 16, he played with the 1st Division Shamrocks from Ireland.

By age 18, Farr was between the pipes for the San Diego Surf, a farm team for then Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Champion San Diego Sockers.

He also coached for the men’s soccer programs at North Salem High School. Most recently, Farr coached the Warrior men’s keepers to the 2006 NAIA Region I tournament.

Irby has been part of the Cascade Surge for 11 years, nine as the President of the club. He is proud to have Corban players and alum affiliated with the Surge. “I think it’s great,” Irby said. “One of the reasons I wanted to coach at Corban is to incorporate more people into our outreach program and I think that is going well.”

Surge players and staff will take the field at McCulloch Stadium in Salem at the season home opener against the BYU Cougars on May 17th at 8:05 PM and host the Ogden Outlaws on May 19th at 8:05 PM.
