May-19-2007 20:21Pac-10 Baseball: Arizona State Blanks Oregon State, 3-0Salem-News.com SPORTSASU pitcher Josh Satow improved his record to 10-3.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pitcher Joe Paterson limited seventh-ranked Arizona State, the nation’s highest-scoring team, to three runs in 8 1/3 innings but the 16th-ranked Beavers fell 3-0 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (36-15, 8-12) brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn’t push across a run. On Saturday, Paterson largely kept Arizona State in check but the Beavers managed just two hits against a trio of Sun Devil pitchers. ASU – nearly 10 runs per game and batting .357 as a team coming into the game – got a two-run homer from Jared Bogany in the fifth inning and a solo homer by Eric Sogard in the ninth. Paterson scattered seven hits, walking none and striking out five as his record fell to 6-6 this season. His 8 1/3 innings were his OSU career high and it matched the longest outing by an Oregon State pitcher this season, which had been turned in by Daniel Turpen in a win over St. Louis in early March. “It seems like the better teams, I throw better against them because they’re not wild swingers,” said Paterson, who had earned the win in the Beavers’ 12-4 win over ASU during February’s Coca-Cola Classic. “If I make a mistake, they’ll capitalize on it ... it’s just hitting my spots.” Paterson retired the first 10 hitters he faced before giving up back-to-back singles to Brett Wallace and Sogard with one out in the top of the fourth inning, but the Beavers turned a double play to get out of the inning. In the fifth, Jason Jarvis led off with a double to centerfield; with one out, Bogany lofted a full-count pitch over the leftfield fence to put ASU up 2-0. Meanwhile, Arizona State lefthander Josh Satow didn’t allow a hit until Mitch Canham singled up the middle with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. That hit followed a walk to John Wallace to put the tying runs on base for Mike Lissman, but he flied out down the leftfield line to end the inning. Oregon State threatened again in the bottom of the eighth inning when Joey Wong walked with one out and Darwin Barney bounced an infield single to the left side. John Wallace grounded to short to start an inning-ending double play, leaving the score 2-0. In the ninth, Satow walked Canham to lead off the inning and was replaced by Matt Spencer; he walked Mike Lissman and the Sun Devils turned to closer Jarvis. Jarvis got Jason Ogata to ground into a fielder’s choice, then hit Braden Wells with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Jarvis then coaxed Jordan Lennerton to fly out to shallow leftfield, and finally fanned pinch-hitter Scott Santschi to end the game. Satow improved his record to 10-3, going eight-plus shutout innings as he allowed two hits and three walks while striking out eight. Jarvis got the save for the second straight game, giving him nine for the season. The Beavers and Sun Devils (40-12, 16-4) finish their series Sunday at 1:00 PM, and the game is sold out. It can be heard live on KEJO-AM (1240) in the Corvallis area, KUIK-AM (1360) in the Portland area, KKNX-AM (840) in the Eugene area and KICE-AM (940) in the Bend area. The games can be heard in Spanish live on KXOR-AM (660) in the Eugene area, KXPD-AM (1040) in the Portland area and KLES-FM (101.7) in the Yakima, Wash. area.
